Ok, I’ll admit that Ebert was right and Transformers 2: The Fallen is pure cinematic junk food, but as a kid of the 70’s I’ll willingly accept the sugar rush.
It only took about 25 years, but I finally got to see the favorite Decepticons of my youth, the Constructicons, join together on the big screen as Devastator (albeit comprised of different robots since 2 of the original members were killed in the first movie.)
I can remember it took me months to acquire all six of those Transformers. Saving enough money was part of the equation, but the bigger issue in that day was access. Back then, my “amazon.com” was a K-Mart and it took many unsuccessful trips before I found Scrapper and Longhaul. However long the wait, it worth it on that glorious day that I could finally hook them all together and place the blaster in Devastator’s hand.
Ironically, the toy was like the movie in so many ways: the parts barely hung together and if you so much as looked at it the wrong way it would fall apart. But like I did with the toy, I’m willing to overlook those flaws for a chance to see the imaginations of my youth brought to life on the screen.
